Welcome to year 1! We hope that your child is going to have a fantastic year in Year 1. We cannot wait to see them continue their journey from the Early Years.
In Year 1, we aim to create a happy, stimulating environment where your child feels valued, safe and motivated to learn. We are going to be learning lots and we will have lots of fun this year. The day starts for Year 1 at 8.50am and finishes at 3.25pm. Lessons will start straight away, so pupils need to arrive promptly to ensure that they don’t miss anything.
This half term we will be reading ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’ and ‘Bog Baby’. Our first Science topic is ‘Living things and their habitats’. In Geography, we will be looking at the local area as well as seasons.

PE
We will have PE every Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child comes into school wearing their PE kit on PE days. Their PE kit consists of a blue school PE t-shirt and maroon shorts. Pupils are welcome to wear plain, grey or black tracksuit bottoms over their shorts during the colder months. They can wear their school jumper for extra warmth over their t-shirt if needed. They do not need to bring an extra hoodie/jumper. Children will need trainers/pumps for PE. They are not allowed to wear trainers on any day other than their PE days unless they are plain black.
Phonics
At Holy Family, we use Little Wandle phonics program to teach phonics. In Year 1, your children will sit their phonic screening assessment to support your child have a look at the link below. You will find all the phonemes (sounds) your child will be expected to know for assessment.

Maths
At Holy Family, we follow the White Rose Maths program where your child is taught maths in blocks. Below are 2 links which can help your children with their maths.

Homework
Each Friday your child will receive homework.
Homework needs to be returned by the following Wednesday.
Homework will consist of a phonics sheet which your child has been learning that week, and maths which again will be linked to that weeks learning. It really does make a difference to your childs confidence in class when they have spent a short time practicing these reading and maths skills at home. 2-5 minutes at a time is more than enough for Year 1.

Reading
Reading books will given out on a Wednesday and need to be returned back to school the following Monday.
Please sign your child’s reading record and write if your child enjoyed the book, if you are very happy with their reading or which part your chid liked. Staff share your comments with your child and it is a wonderful way to communicate how you feel your child is progressing and gives them a real confidence boost to hear your positive comments.
