Welcome to year 1! We know that your child is going to have a fantastic year in Year 1. We cannot wait to see them continue their journey from the Early Years.
In Year 1, we aim to create a happy, stimulating environment where your child feels valued, safe and motivated to learn. We are going to be learning lots and we will have lots of fun this year.
Phonics
At Holy Family, we use Little Wandle phonics program to teach phonics. In Year 1, your children will sit their phonic screening assessment to support your child have a look at the link below. You will find all the phonemes (sounds) your child will be expected to know for assessment.

Maths
At Holy Family, we follow the White Rose Maths program where your child is taught maths in blocks. Below are 2 links which can help your children with their maths.

Homework
Your child will learn a lot in Year 1 but it is important that this learning continues at home to ensure their progress. Homework is just as important as the work we do in school and consolidates what we do during the week. It is vital that homework is returned on Friday and is completed to the same high standard we expect in school. Phonics is taught every day in Year 1 and the children will also read every day. Please continue to read at home with your child to improve their fluency.
P.E.
Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E. kit on a Thursday and Friday. This consists of burgundy / black shorts or joggers and a pale blue t-shirt.
